Save and reuse chart templates

Capture chart settings and apply reusable setups without confusing them with workspaces or drawings.

Choose the right reusable object#

A chart template captures an individual chart setup. A workspace preserves a complete desk with its canvas tabs, items and windows. A workspace template creates a new desk from a reusable layout. Drawings have their own local, layout and global sharing rules. These objects solve different tasks, so choose the smallest one that preserves what you need.

Use a chart template for “EURUSD momentum review with moving averages and RSI”, or a price/volume layout you reuse across securities. Use a workspace for a whole equity-research environment containing a screener, several charts, backtest and portfolio panels. Template names should explain purpose and important assumptions, such as “FX 15m — EMA/RSI”, rather than imply a profitable strategy.

Save a chart template#

  1. Select a chart and finish its instrument, timeframe, chart type and indicator setup.
  2. Check its broker/live/historical source context, trading controls and visibility settings.
  3. Open Templates, or right-click the chart and choose Chart templates….
  4. Choose Save this chart as template….
  5. Enter a clear Template name and review the displayed summary.
  6. Save, then reopen the Templates menu to verify the entry is available.

The templates menu can show workspace-owned saved entries and available plugin templates. A plugin template depends on its plugin being installed and discoverable. A template reference does not bundle an arbitrary indicator implementation or supply broker credentials.

Open a template safely#

The template selector distinguishes Open as new chart from Apply to this chart. The latter replaces the selected chart's settings; its alternate shortcut is shown in the selector where supported. Pick a template, inspect its summary and choose the intended action.

Opening a new chart is useful when comparing an existing setup with another one. Applying is useful when you deliberately want to replace a chart's configuration. Confirm the selected panel before applying; a section toolbar targets the currently selected chart. After either action, inspect the actual chart's account, symbol, interval, type, sources and indicators. A template name is not an execution account.

Allow the chart to start or refresh before evaluating it. Indicators can need warmup history, and a template using an unavailable plugin can fail to provide the expected studies. An empty historical area may be a source/history issue rather than a broken template.

Reuse across asset classes#

Treat instrument-sensitive values as deliberate choices. A Renko brick size suitable for an equity index may be unusable on a forex pair. A volume study on exchange trade volume and one on CFD tick volume do not measure the same quantity. Futures use contract and tick economics; equities commonly use shares; spot crypto uses fractional base quantities.

For a multi-asset review, create separate templates with suitable defaults, or inspect every size/price parameter after applying a shared visual setup. A source-specific instrument mapping must still be valid for the selected account. Never assume equal ticker text makes a spread bet, CFD, spot coin and future equivalent.

Manage saved entries#

Choose Manage templates… to see the saved chart templates in the current workspace. The list provides rename and delete actions. Rename template changes its label. Delete template? asks before removing the saved entry. Deleting the template is different from deleting a chart already created from it; review the action's scope rather than closing the chart as a substitute.

Use versioned or dated names when you want to preserve an earlier study setup while testing a change. Rename “FX trend v1” to a durable descriptive name and save a separate revised template instead of silently treating one old label as a new rulebook. Saving the workspace preserves its workspace-owned template registry alongside its other settings.

Keep drawings and layouts predictable#

A drawing's Local scope belongs to one chart; Layout shares the same symbol within a named workspace; Global shares the same symbol across workspaces. A chart template is not the drawing-export mechanism. Duplicate or export a workspace when the requirement is to preserve its owned local/layout drawing set. Workspace templates exclude drawings.

Applying chart settings can change which drawing objects are visible because drawings are symbol scoped. If annotations seem to vanish, confirm the chart symbol and open Drawing objects…, which includes hidden objects. Do not immediately redraw or delete shared objects.

Troubleshoot missing templates or studies#

If a template is missing, confirm the current workspace and whether its plugin is installed. If a plugin template is listed with an error, use the error details to fix its dependency rather than repeatedly applying it. Reload the catalog after a successful plugin build/publication if the normal refresh has not completed.

If applying a template produces an unexpected chart, use chart history/Undo where available for the change, or reapply a previously saved setup. Verify which chart was selected and whether Apply to this chart or Open as new chart was used. When reporting a problem, include the template name, exact instrument/feed, chart type and missing indicator type, with a screenshot of the visible result. Exclude account secrets.

Navigate charts and review trading records, Add, configure and interpret chart indicators, Draw, measure and share chart annotations.
